Sergio Reis portrait Sergio Reis jovem guarda rocker, but made a transition into the sertaneja regional pop style -- roughly the equivalent of Nashville country -- where he became a major national star. Does that make him the Brazilian Kenny Rogers? Yes... Yes I think it does. Here's a quick look at his work.

Discography - Best-Ofs

Sergio Reis "Serie Bis - Jovem Guarda" (EMI, 2000)
The teenybopper pop roots of Northeastern sertanejo singer Sergio Reis... I haven't heard this set yet, but I'm pretty curious about it... At any rate, if you want to check out his early jovem guarda rock years, this is probably your best bet.

Sergio Reis "Dose Dupla" (2000)

Sergio Reis "40 Anos De Estrada" (Sony-BMG, 2000)
This box set is actually a straight reissue of several albums, including Boiadeiro Errante, from 1976, A Volta Da Asa Branca (1980), Saudade Da Minha Terra (1983) and Lobo Da Estrada (1985).

Discography - Albums

Sergio Reis "Coracao De Papel" (RCA, 1967)
(Produced by Tony Campello)

His first full LP, recorded after a few years in the Sao Paulo rock elite, is solid jovem guarda teenybopper pop, mixing twangy, Byrds-y electric guitars with semi-square pop orchestrations. The title track, "Coracao De Papel," was a major hit and remained one of his signature songs for years to come. A strong album for the genre and a career highlight... Also, much, much different than what was to come!

Sergio Reis "Sergio Reis" (RCA, 1983)
Although this disc was one of his best known sets of sertaneja music, and shows Reis decked out on the C&W cowboy gear that is the hallmark of that style, this strikes me as sounding a lot like Italian soft pop. Doesn't do much for me, but it was a big hit, particularly the song "Panela Velha," written by the gaucho singer, Moraezinho.
