A white South African whose family worked in the diamond industry, Bobby Angel (ne Robert George Engleman) was a diamond cutter by trade, though he devoted himself to playing music after completing his stint in the Army. After playing in the bands of Johannesburg pop/jazz bandleaders Hymie Baleson and Dan Hill, Engleman emerged as a solo artist, changing his name to Bobby Angel at the urging of producer Dan Hill. He first tried his hand at pop vocals, threading the line between teenybopper rock and Sinatra-esque crooning and finally found success after switching to country music. His biggest successes in the South African charts were in the mid-1970s, then beginning in 1979 he became the host of a television variety show called Gentle On My Mind.

Bobby Angel/Various Artists "GENTLE ON MY MIND" (Teal Records, 197--?) (LP)
This was a souvenir of the television variety show, Gentle On My Mind, which Bobby Angel hosted from roughly 1979-1985. The program was originally a showcase for visiting countrypolitan star Glen Campbell (hence the title) but was kept running after Campbell's tour... Angel was the first host in 1979, and rejoined as emcee in 1983 after pursuing his career a few more years. Not sure which year this came out, or who the other performers were on this particular disc.

Working in partnership as a country music duo, Bobby Angel and Barbara Ray won a Sarie award (the South African equivalent of a Grammy) in 1976, following their #2 hit single, 1975's "The Greatest Christmas Gift." That track is not included here, though the title track to this album, "Voices," was a Top Twenty hit in '83.
